• Start point: Piazza Generale Avitabile, S. Lazzaro or Piazza Paolo Capasso, Bomerano
Information on values and points of interest
Along the descent through Furore you walk among terraced fields, mostly vineyards and lemon groves, torn with tenacity from the steep orography of the place. Here and there there are examples of typical Amalfi architecture (houses with arched loggias and sometimes extradossed roofs), while you can admire the promontory of Capo di Conca and the silhouette of Cilento beyond the Gulf. After passing the Porpora farmhouse and starting to descend into the deep and narrow terminal gorge of the Rio Penise, one understands why it was baptized Schiato; term of Greek origin (from skiatos) which means fracture, border. Its sheer walls make it really look like a gap due to a sudden tectonic movement (while, in fact, it is the result of slow river erosion; in the past it really represented an impassable border before the daring bridge of the coastal state road reunited the opposite banks .
The last flights of stairs, before reaching the bottom, pass in the suggestive seaside village of Marina Furoris, which enchants for the simple but elegant lines of the various houses, as well as for the way in which they approach one another; almost "crouched" in the narrow space that the rock offered here. A stone's throw from the houses there is the shoreline; penetrated into the gorge following the raising of the sea level, which took place after the last ice age. Finally, going towards the land, you can visit the rock chapel of S. Caterina d'Alessandria, protector of millers and the ancient water mills (three mills and two paper mills), which have recently been restored and museumized.
Route information
Once you have reached the locality of Tuoro (South West suburb of S. Lazzaro), take the asphalted road that descends in hairpin bends along the side of the Penise-Schiato canyon. At the end of the asphalt, continue straight, with the comfortable path (also known as the Abu Tabela Path) that walks at the base of the rocky wall. After about 700 m you reach the bottom of the gorge and, near the ruins of an ancient mill, jump across the narrow rocky riverbed of the river. Passed on the other side, you walk at high altitude until you reach the first houses of Furore (Pino locality). Here the path becomes a paved road that must be followed until you come out on the provincial road that from Agerola descends to Amalfi. When you reach the crossroads via Lamaro, take the steps leading to the Church of S. Michele; along the route it intersects the Provinciale several times. Follow the steps up to the locality of Porpore, intersect the rolling stock and, at the west shoulder of the bridge over the "fjord" of Furore, take the steps that go down to the beach at its bottom (Marina di Furore). To return to Agerola you can take advantage of the SITA services for Amalfi and, once here, those for Agerola.
